The Project:
Project was approved on December 16, 2004, and closed on October 31, 2012. The Project was supported by an IBRD Loan of US$120 million. The objectives of the Project included the strengthening of the Government of Romania’s ability to undertake mining sector reform. The Project comprised the completion of civil works on different environmentally hazardous former mining sites, including the one at Vermesti.
The Request:
The Requesters claimed that their safety and houses have been affected by “works that were not finished and those that were finished [which] were not done according to the project.” The local residents considered that their houses and the street itself were adversely affected after the deepening of a water channel using heavy machinery. They claimed that their houses are no longer safe to live in.
Decision:
Request not registered. Following the receipt of the Request, the Inspection Panel conducted its due diligence and ascertained that the Project was closed on October 31, 2012, and that the Request is therefore not admissible for the Panel's review under the Resolution Establishing the Inspection Panel (para 14(c)). The Panel issued a Notice of non-Registration to inform the Board of its decision.
