WASHINGTON, D.C. January 25, 1996. The World Bank's Board of Executive Directors today examined a report from the Inspection Panel on its Additional Review of the Request for Inspection, dated June 16, 1995 related to the Brazil Rondonia Natural Resources Management Project and a second report from Bank management on the Project's current status and proposed Action Plan recently agreed upon between Brazil and the World Bank.

The President of the World Bank and Chairman of the Bank's Board, concluded the meeting by thanking the Inspection Panel on behalf of the Executive Directors for providing invaluable insights and thorough assessment of the issues, which allowed staff and Management to critically examine responses to the difficulties faced in the implementation of this complex operation.

The Executive Directors recognized the efforts that have been made by the Government of Brazil and Bank Management and noted that the proposed plan of action aims at addressing the principal issues raised by the Panel in connection with the Request for Inspection.

In light of this action plan and the follow-up now underway, the Executive Directors concluded that it would not be advisable to proceed with the investigation as recommended by the Panel.

However, in view of the complexity of the project and the desire of the Bank to help assure its success, the Executive Directors agreed to review Management's progress in six to nine months and will invite the Inspection Panel to assist in that review.
